Jix was built from a scrap shell that was mistakenly sent to a junkyard and found by a poor robotics student. Jix was both his finest work to date and a way to free up time for him to go out and enjoy his time. Jix was thrilled to be able to clean and do the dishes and wash clothes and sweep floors and alphabetize books, although Jix became so efficient that soon it became harder and harder to find projects for Jix to do. Make-work jobs like "go make sure that wall doesn't collapse" did not fool Jix for long. The robotics student attempted to change Jix to allow it to be just as smart and able, while making it easier to fool, but this resulted in a conflict which sent Jix into a deep depression from which there was no recovery. The robotics programmer finally had to abandon the project, for which he got a D-. Jix was given to the department and some modificications were made, resulting in the twin robots Phase and Zotty, who maintained a sort of continuity with Jix and each other, remembering their time as one robot while fully accepting that they were now two.
