it's tragic
the magic
I see in the eyes
of the little ones grown into men
it's sad
that they're glad
that I came to this bar
and I hear the words "first crush" again
I can't feel alarmed
but there's never a charm
when they say mine were those they first noticed
and alone I go home
sure they ask; I say no
because innocence I've always treasured

I was happy to work
when it started
I was happy
to make what I made
I was always polite
to the gentlemen types
but the boss made it clear I must stay
the sweet popular type off the camera
I could date, sure, but not date around
and slowly those my age found women who would
and the older men, I never felt like I should
and then suddenly I was the Duchess of Good
and tucking myself into bed

I poured into
what I'd do
when I worked on stage
with the guest stars who thought I smiled real
I never
not ever
cracked through that veneer
I just didn't bother to think how I'd feel
when finally appeared
and it did, like I feared
the day when they said there'd be change
and now I was the Queen
a promotion supreme
to make room for a Duchess of a more generous age

today's more
permissive
she has lots of fun
and compared to the tabloids she's tame
she flits on the breeze
and she sees who she sees
and she doesn't get everyone's name
she's already got contracts
for laying down voice tracks
and she'll grow up a new type of man
and one day in bars
they'll call her a star
and she'll probably go back again

it's tragic
the magic
I see in the eyes
of the little ones grown into men
it's sad
that they're glad
that I came to this bar
and I hear the words "first crush" again
I can't feel alarmed
but there's never a charm
when they say that I was the best Duchess
and alone I go home
sure they ask; I say no
because if I said yes
and I could do it, I guess
I might no longer be their ideal.
